What is Olaplex?

Updated: Feb 7

Local Roots

Did you know that the revolutionary hair care system now known as Olaplex was created by two scientists out of their garage here in Santa Barbara? When asked what he thought the “Holy Grail” of hair was, Dean Christal, creator of Olaplex, answered “We could change the world by making women more confident with amazing, damage free hair.” Christal’s mother was a licensed hairdresser who ran a salon out of her home and his father was a beauty distributor who owned 26 stores. So, you could say he knew a thing or two about the industry. Olaplex launched in 2014 and has revolutionized the industry with its patented bond multiplying technology.

The name’s Bond. Disulfide Bond.

In order to understand how Olaplex works, we have to take a quick look at the structure of hair. (Not into the science? Scroll down to explore Olaplex products!) Disulfide bonds are an essential part of the “microcellular cement” that keeps the internal structure of the hair together. They help support the structure, strength, and stability of your hair. Think of disulfide bonds as the glue that holds everything together. When these bonds are broken, it results in hair damage. Hair experiences damage daily in 4 ways: mechanical, thermal, environmental, and chemical.

Broken Bonds

When a bond breaks there is a chance that it can rebuild on its own but if it doesn’t it can lead to more hair damage. Let’s take bleaching for example, the hydrogen peroxide in bleach works to breakup the melanin in your hair but it also breaks up the disulfide bonds and keeps them from forming a bond again.

Olaplex to the Rescue

How does Olaplex help keep your hair healthy through daily damage? The short answer is it’s bond building technology. It’s patented active ingredient, Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate, helps rebuild the broken bonds caused by damage.

Let’s take a look at their amazing products.
